(Environment Canada) said one likely twister left a wake of destruction near Fergus, northwest of Guelph.
Centre Wellington
Const. Keith Robb

Severe storms hammer Ontario
At least one tornado reported as heavy rains create flood conditions in GTA

Homes were ripped apart, trees downed and trucks overturned today after much of southern Ontario was lashed by storms that spawned several possible tornadoes.
Environment Canada said one likely twister left a wake of destruction near Fergus, northwest of Guelph.
Meteorologist Geoff Coulson said late today that a preliminary assessment of the damage was done, but added investigators would be back out tomorrow to corroborate whether a tornado had hit.
“We’ve had a lot of strong evidence to indicate that it probably was a tornado as opposed to just strong wind gusts,” Coulson said.
Cars were tossed into a ditch and roofs were ripped from homes and barns. Tattered bales of hay, jagged fragments of wooden fences and severed tree branches lay strewn about.
A state of emergency was declared in the community of Centre Wellington, which includes Fergus.
Ontario Provincial Police said the storm directly contributed to at least one collision on a local highway, sending one woman to hospital with minor injuries.
“As far as we know there are no other reported injuries,” said Const. Keith Robb.
The severe series of storms that began around 1:30 p.m., just east of Milverton, near Stratford, also caused flooding in some areas.
Toronto’s afternoon commute was snarled as cars were forced to plow through highways that in places resembled rivers.
In nearby Guelph and Orangeville, there were reports of trees knocking down power lines, said Hydro One spokeswoman Kathleen Welsh.
As a result, close to 10,000 Ontario residents were left without electricity, Welsh said.
“We’re not sure what all the damage is yet because we are still patrolling the lines and assessing the damage,” she said.
Coulson couldn’t confirm whether the downed power lines were the result of a tornado or strong winds.
As the storm advanced through the afternoon, Environment Canada issued a tornado warning for Toronto — a rarity for the city — and its surrounding areas.
“We received a report from a volunteer storm spotter of a tornado in (northern Toronto),” Coulson said. “But we haven’t been able to verify if there was any damage or if anyone else saw this.”
In some parts of the city, the sky was tinged green by sunlight reflecting off falling hail.
In Brampton, west of Toronto, skies grew ominously dark as screeching winds contorted trees and drove sheets of rain sideways.
Up to 100 millimetres of rain was reported to have fallen in Brampton, Coulson said.
“We’ve got standing water on the roads three-quarters of the way up on to hubcaps,” he said.
By late afternoon, many of the tornado warnings in southwestern Ontario were downgraded to severe thunderstorm warnings as the severe weather moved further east.
However, the storms delayed flights departing from Pearson International Airport throughout the day, said Connie Turner of the Greater Toronto Airports Authority.
